Finding the Right Fit: Paul S.’ Journey Through Supported Employment
Paul first began his Supported Employment journey in 2023 with the goal of obtaining employment in either a hospital or school setting. While working with Dawn B., he was able to strengthen his job development and interviewing skills, providing him with the tools he needed to obtain employment in a hospital cafeteria.
Unfortunately, the workplace setting was not a positive one. Paul was working in an unsupportive environment where he worked long hours with little to no recognition of his dedication and hard work. His team would isolate him, and he began to dread going into work. Dawn assisted Paul in advocating for himself, but there were unfortunately no changes made in the workplace.
Needing to make an urgent shift, he applied to a Goodwill Donation Center and was hired soon after. While Paul greatly enjoyed his employment, he still wanted to pursue his goal of working at either a school or hospital.
Pursuing a Long-Term Goal
He then sought assistance from the Supported Employment Program again and was able to shift his career field. His Employment Coordinator helped him update his resume, review interview protocol and apply to various positions.
He soon had an interview at a local school district for a food service position, which was a long-term goal for him. He was offered employment soon after and is now working in a school cafeteria with a supportive team who admires and recognizes his hard work and strong skill set.
Growing in Confidence
Initially, Paul began as a substitute cafeteria worker but was offered a permanent position, with more than one school asking for him to remain in their cafeteria.
As Paul began working in his new setting, his confidence began to grow, and he once again began looking forward to going to work. At first, he was apprehensive about working in a new setting due to his previous negative experience. However, after receiving support from both his supervisor and job coach, he began to feel more confident in his role and took strong initiative when trying new tasks.
Paul is eagerly waiting for the upcoming school year so he can return to his position, and he is hoping to work his way up to a full-time position.
