What is Goodwill?

  • We are a retail store filled with bargains for the cost conscious shopper.
  • We are a donation center – a place to recycle items no longer needed.
  • We are a resource for businesses for filling permanent and temporary jobs and for outsourcing light industrial work.
  • But most importantly, we are a non-profit provider of job training and career services for individuals with disabilities and disadvantages. Put quite simply, Goodwill’s mission is to help put people to work.

Jondhi with his family in 2006

At 71 years old, Jondhi’s life is a powerful example of resilience and purpose. After spending 18 years incarcerated, he returned home in 2009 determined to rebuild. His transition began with six months in a halfway house, followed by enrollment in Goodwill’s rehabilitation program, where he found both stability and support as he adjusted to life outside the system.

Through Goodwill, Jondhi gained more than job experience. He participated in anger management classes that helped him process emotions shaped by years of incarceration, while also building confidence in a supportive work environment. Focused on moving forward, he treated each day as a step toward independence, even preparing for job interviews immediately after work.

Driven by his own experiences, Jondhi founded The Center for Returning Citizens Community Healing Center (TCRC) in Philadelphia. What began as an effort to help individuals secure jobs and housing evolved into a deeper mission of guiding returning citizens toward long-term success by shifting mindsets and helping them understand the value of freedom. In 2013, his journey was recognized nationally when he was named Goodwill’s Graduate of the Year.

When the pandemic shifted community needs in 2020, TCRC adapted, becoming a vital food distribution resource. Today, the organization serves tens of thousands of people each month across the Philadelphia area. Through it all, Jondhi has rebuilt strong family connections and continues to lead with a commitment to helping others create a better path forward.

At 28, Eleni had already built a strong work history as a teacher’s aide and Certified Nursing Assistant. But despite her experience, she knew she wanted a different career path that better matched her goals.

After being referred to Goodwill by the New Jersey Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, Eleni participated in a clerical assessment program designed to prepare participants for today’s increasingly automated office environments. While tools like spreadsheets and presentations once felt intimidating, Eleni developed new skills and earned certifications in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.

“I never knew Goodwill as anything more than a store and donation center,” Eleni shared. “It’s really a place for new beginnings, helping me pave the way to a more permanent career that aligns with my goals and values.”

Denise standing near a yellow school bus.

Denise Abrams had been considering a career in the trucking industry after seeing her cousins succeed as bus and truck drivers. She initially planned to enroll in a CDL-B training program through a trucking company, but the cost and long term employment commitment made it a difficult option.

That changed when she was referred to Goodwill’s CDL-B training program. When Program Coordinator Mary Cunningham reached out to her, Denise quickly realized this opportunity could help her pursue her goals without the financial burden of traditional training programs.

“Thank God Ms. Cunningham called me about her program,” Denise shared. “The truck training would have been out of pocket, and you would have had to stay with them for two years.”

Encouraged by her instructor and classmates, Denise stayed committed to the program. After six months of classroom learning and behind the wheel training, she successfully passed all of her exams.

Today, Denise is preparing to begin her new career in the bus transportation industry, confident in the skills and support she gained through Goodwill’s CDL-B training program.
