Moving beyond employment and toward a career that can provide greater stability.

Building a New Path: Brandon D.’s Journey Through Reentry

When Brandon D. first entered the Goodwill program, he was facing a major transition in his life. After serving eight years in prison, he returned home in need of direction, stability and a clear path forward. Like many individuals navigating reentry, Brandon was motivated to rebuild his life but also faced the realities and responsibilities that came with starting over.

Finding a Starting Point

Shortly after enrolling in the program, Brandon secured employment with LIFEMED as a driver helper. While this was an important first step toward establishing stability, his motivation began to wane as additional personal and financial pressures arose.

Brandon had filed for custody of his children and was subsequently placed on child support, leaving him with very little income to support his own basic needs. Despite working full-time, he recognized that his current position was not providing the financial stability he needed to support both himself and his family.

In February, Brandon met with his Service Navigator to have an honest conversation about his options, long-term goals and the opportunities available to help him move forward.

Together, they explored the possibility of CDL training as a pathway to a career with greater earning potential.

Working Toward Something More

Brandon made the decision to pursue the training while continuing to maintain his full-time employment, a commitment that required significant determination, time management and perseverance.

His hard work paid off.

In June 2026, Brandon successfully earned his CDL Certificate of Completion while continuing to work full-time. By obtaining this credential, he has positioned himself for new career opportunities that can provide a more sustainable income and greater financial stability for both himself and his children.

Brandon is especially grateful that Goodwill provided him with the opportunity to pursue CDL training without creating an additional financial burden during an already challenging time in his life.

Support Along the Way

Throughout his participation in the program, Brandon’s Service Navigator provided ongoing guidance, encouragement, goal setting and support.

Although Brandon chose not to participate in the peer mentoring component that was strongly encouraged when he enrolled, his Service Navigator became a consistent source of counsel as he navigated difficult decisions and remained focused on his future.

Reflecting on his experience, Brandon shared how meaningful it was to know that there was an organization, and people within that organization, who genuinely cared about his success.

Brandon’s journey demonstrates the important role reentry services can play in creating real opportunities for individuals who are committed to rebuilding their lives.

By providing access to career training, supportive services, guidance and encouragement, Goodwill helped Brandon move beyond simply finding employment and toward developing a career that can provide greater stability for himself and his family.

His success is a powerful example of how access to the right opportunities and support can help individuals returning home build a new path forward.
