Welcome to Earth Week, a time dedicated to honoring our planet and fostering sustainable practices. Earth Week kicks off on April 16th and runs through April 22nd. This year, we invite you to join Goodwill in a week-long journey to adopt eco-conscious habits and contribute positively to the environment and your local community. With over 100 million pounds of donations collected annually, Goodwill Industries of Southern NJ & Philadelphia sets a remarkable example of sustainable action. It’s this commitment that fuels our desire for your participation! Here’s our seven-day roadmap to living a more environmentally friendly lifestyle:
Start the week by decluttering your home and organizing your belongings. Sort through clothes and items that can be reused or repurposed. Create a ‘Yes’, ‘No’, and ‘Maybe’ pile and organize your items in each category. Revisit your ‘Maybe’ pile and decide whether you really need it or don’t. Remember, one person’s trash could be another person’s treasure!
Each year, millions of usable goods, such as clothing, furniture, electronics, and other household items, end up in landfills rather than being repurposed or donated. Instead of letting your gently used items go to waste, donate them to your nearest Goodwill store or schedule a convenient home pickup through our partnership with ReSupply. If you’re looking to enhance your community’s green initiatives, consider hosting a Goodwill donation drive at your school, business, or church!
What to DonateExplore the aisles of Goodwill for sustainable shopping options. From clothing to home goods, dive into a treasure trove of gently-used items waiting to be rediscovered. By shopping at Goodwill, you not only give items a second chance but also support job training programs and career services for individuals facing barriers to employment. We offer impactful programs including Goodwill’s Helms Academy, which offers a tuition free pathway to earn a high school diploma, along with valuable career resources like My Career Advisor and much more!
Store LocatorTransform your home into a sustainable sanctuary by thrift shopping for furniture and home decor at Goodwill. Discover items that complement your home ambiance, such as a lamp or end table with a minimalistic look. By choosing pre-loved items, you reduce the demand for new products and minimize your environmental footprint. Embrace the charm of vintage finds while crafting a space that reflects your eco-conscious values.
Revamp your wardrobe with eco-friendly fashion finds from Goodwill. Explore the racks for vintage and luxury clothing that adds character to your style while keeping more garments out of landfills. Seek out designer pieces like a Michael Kors bag or Lululemon athletic wear for the spring season. With each purchase, you contribute to a more sustainable fashion industry and promote the reuse of textiles.
Get creative with upcycled crafts using thrifted items from Goodwill. Repaint a candle warmer or turn a big t-shirt into a stylish tote bag. By repurposing items, you breathe new life into old objects and reduce waste in a fun and inventive way.
Wrap up Earth Week by starting your own composting journey. Thrift for a plastic bin or container at Goodwill to create a composting system for kitchen scraps. Composting diverts waste from landfills while also yielding nutrient-rich soil for gardening. Join the movement towards a greener future by turning your food scraps into fertile soil for your plants. And as the day draws to a close, why not celebrate Earth Day by planting a tree?
Let’s make every day Earth Day by embracing sustainable habits and supporting our planet and community. Together, we can create a brighter, greener future for generations to come. Join Goodwill in celebrating Earth Week and making a difference, one small action at a time.
Happy Earth Week!
