COUTURE FASHION FROM GOODWILL!

by Penelope Cake, Goodwill guest blogger

I shopped this complete outfit at the Goodwill store in Millville NJ.

The coat came first and it inspired me to go for a Chanel look.  After all, the 2015 NY fashion show begins this week and I have to be ready for the runway!

The label says BB Dakota and the price was $6.99.
These similarly textured shorts ($2.99) were a perfect match for the coat and this lacy ivory T ($4.99) complimented both pieces perfectly.  But what about the bottom half of me?  I was feeling skeptical about completing the outfit when I found these shoes.
And like Cinderella, they fit me perfectly ($5.99).
I also found some pantyhose in a lovelyshade of beige for $.99.

I was feeling mighty fortunate with this treasure trove of fashionable separates and headed for the cash register to check out when lo and behold, a black patent leather bag with gold chains ($6.99) was staring me right in the face!

Who ever thought that I would be able to put together a couture Chanel look for less than $30.00?
Thank you, Goodwill!
See you again soon.

Spotlight on Success

Meet Judy Margulies. Judy M _fb

After 20+ years in the banking world, Judy decided to take an early retirement but shortly after realized she wasn’t ready for the world of retirement. She started searching for a new job but after several months with no job prospects, she became involved with the Women’s Opportunity Center of Burlington County.  They referred her to Goodwill’s JOB CLUB for career services.

From the moment she stepped through Goodwill’s doors, she felt at ease and confident that she was on the right path.  Goodwill Job Developer Sean Hinnegan quickly helped Judy update her resume, conduct job searches and follow up on submitted resumes.  Before long, she heard those magical words—“You’re hired.”

In her new position as branch manager for Beneficial Bank, Judy is responsible for all facets of branch management—ranging from new business development, sales, customer service and audits.  “This job means the world to me.  It has given me a sense of renewal and purpose,” she said.  Goodwill’s caring and compassionate staff of job developers certainly made a positive impression on Judy.

Thrifting 101 with Goodwill

Everywhere I turn lately the word “thrifting” keeps popping up. I hear it mentioned in TV shows and movies and see the term coined in magazines and online. According to Urban Dictionary, thrifting refers to shopping in thrift stores for trendy, vintage clothing and/or other items.

Have you considered thrifting?

argumentative essay topics mental illness edit my essay national post-secondary do my english essay address will essay writing help program through essay help online training opportunities college essay writers practical advice custom essay writing service name popular essay writing tips Army came narrative essay example growing non-profit how to write a research paper territories worldwide write my essay for free winning products write my paper for me for freeaudio pronunciations writing essays services best servicespecialist fonts professional resume writing service new arrivals

Not only has thrift shopping become socially acceptable, its also becoming a trend to find out who can land the best deals. You can be sure you’ll find the best brands for less at Goodwill. We make sure that our stores are clean, well organized and stocked full of awesome finds.

Since I started working at Goodwill, I have scored some major bargains! Like the BCBG MaxAzria dress priced for $8.99 with the tags still on it; or the Sarah Jessica Parker Smitten purse I found for $3.99. Both of which would have retailed well over $100. What’s even better than the savings, is the countless compliments I receive on these items!

In my years shopping Goodwill stores and filing through the racks and shelves of endless treasures  I’ve come up with some tips that I want to share with you. I promise, once you start, you won’t be able to stop!

TIPS THAT CAN HELP STRETCH YOUR BUDGET AND BECOME A THRIFT SHOPPING STAR

  • Plan and map out your trip: Visit Goodwill’s website to find the locations closest to you. Also, keep a running lists of wants and needs so you know what to look for. Need a lamp for your guest bedroom? New bookshelf for the den? Your list will help guide you if you decide to stop by a store.
  • Time is your friend: Be willing to look, for a long time, through a lot of stuff. Thrift stores have great finds, but great finds mean diligent hunting.
  • Try it on: Or at least do a rough measurement. It’s better to get something too big that can be tailored than something too small that can only be sewn into something else or given away.
  • Keep an open mind: Think creatively because everything can be altered, layered, or turned into and entirely different piece of fabulous clothing.
  • Buy what you LOVE: Keep personal style in mind since it’s easy to forget what you’ll actually wear and get excited about something that seems cool on the rack, but isn’t when you get it home.
  •  Check Labels: Look for brand names as these are items that are usually high quality and made to last.
  • Get creative: People are getting more and more creative with thrifted finds with the help of sites like Pinterest! Spot an old brass lamp? A little spray paint goes a long way. For those who have basic sewing skills, a ladies skirt or even a tablecloth can easily be turned into an adorable dress! Keep your eyes peeled for fabrics that appeal to you.
  • Shop Often. With thousands of items donated every day, you never know what’s in store!
  • Get some, give some:  Keep your wardrobe from overflowing by practicing “one item in, one item out.” Donate what no longer fits in your closet to the Goodwill store you just purchased from!

Thrifting is fun, helps you save money and best of all proceeds from the sale of items in Goodwill’s retail stores help fund job training programs and career services for people with special needs in the community. It also keeps perfectly usable goods out of local landfills-the ultimate recycling practice!

Go Green this Holiday Season at Goodwill

Did you know that each year between Thanksgiving and the New Year, Americans generate an extra one million tons of waste per week? Holiday cards, wrapping paper, unwanted gifts and more are tossed to the curbside and make their way to local landfills.

Help reduce the amount of waste generated during the holidays by shopping at and donating to Goodwill. Goodwill is the perfect place to shop, whether you’re looking for something new to wear to a holiday party, home décor to make your house merry and bright or DIY gifts. And remember– rather than toss unwanted gifts from family or friends (like the pink bunny pajamas in A Christmas Story), donate them to Goodwill. It could be just what someone else is looking for!

Here are some simple tips to help reduce your carbon footprint this holiday season.

  •  DIY gift baskets: Goodwill always has a variety of baskets to choose from to create unique gift baskets like these from My Delicious Ambiguity Blog.  My favorite is the spa gift basket!

  • Homemade wrapping paper: If every American family wrapped just three presents in re-used materials, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields. So, instead of buying expensive wrapping paper, wrap presents with recycled items like old book pages, colorful pages torn from magazines or newspaper, paper shopping bags, etc… Check out some of these ideas from The Living Green Solution.

  • Holiday Serving Ware: With cookie exchanges and other festive parties, there is baking and cooking galore. Use holiday platters and plates from Goodwill to create beautiful cookie platters or potluck dishes to give as hostess gifts.
