Spotlight on Success: 2013 Graduate of the Year: J. Jondhi Harrell

j awards dinnerOut of the 4.2 million Americans who received employment and training services from Goodwills across the nation last year, ONE was chosen as Goodwill’s 2013 Graduate of the Year. We are incredibly honored to announce that this year’s winner is a graduate of Goodwill Industries of Southern NJ & Philadelphia’s Ex-Offender Re-Entry program! We congratulate J. Jondhi Harrell for receiving this national award.

After serving almost two decades in prison, J. Jondhi Harrell is now an outspoken advocate for individuals who were formerly incarcerated as they rejoin their communities. He began mentoring others while still in prison and, upon his release, enrolled in Goodwill’s Ex-Offender Re-Entry Program, which helps people with criminal backgrounds gain work experience and build a resume. While in the program, Harrell used transitional employment with Goodwill as a stepping stone to other work. He also earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Phoenix and is currently working toward a master’s in social work at Temple University.

When he’s not studying, Harrell divides his time between working as a service coordinator at Pathways to Housing PA in Philadelphia and running his own nonprofit, The Center for Returning Citizens, that helps people with criminal backgrounds find work, housing and other supports. Harrell is a tireless advocate for those who’ve had similar experiences to his own, and he’s a confident public speaker, spreading the word to policy makers, the media and the public about the need for a continuum of services for this population.

Harrell says his accomplishments would not have been possible without Goodwill’s help. “I am proud to be a part of the Goodwill family. The Goodwill model for assisting former prisoners should be adopted across the country. Recidivism rates would fall, families would be reunited and communities would be stronger.”

Harrell will receive his award this month at Goodwill’s annual Delegate Assembly meeting in Grand Rapids, MI..

Think Before You Donate this Holiday Season

‘Tis the season for giving and for many local residents, the holiday season means a time to give back and donate gently-used clothing, toys, books and other accessories to charity.

Goodwill encourages residents to do their homework and find out where your donations are going before making the choice to donate. Many times the charity bins found in store parking lots and strip malls benefit  for-profit companies that sell your donations to Third World countries.

When you donate to Goodwill, you can feel confident that your donations are helping people right here in our communities. Proceeds from the revenue of donated goods in Goodwill’s area retail stores help people with special needs get to work.

There are 23 convenient donation centers throughout Southern and Central NJ and Philadelphia. A donation attendant can help unload your donations and give you a receipt for tax purposes. For added convenience, you can access your donation history, reprint individualized receipts and donation reports using Goodwill’s online automated iDonate system.

GOODWILL’S DONATION CYCLE

1. You donate gently-used items to Goodwill.

2. We sell them in our retail stores.

3. Revenue from their sale fund important job training programs that help individuals with disabilities and disadvantages gain marketable job skills.

4. Graduates of our job training programs secure competitive jobs in the community and become proud, tax paying members of the workforce.

As always, thank you for donating to Goodwill! Together we are building stronger communities through the power of work.

Being Green

At Goodwill, we like to consider ourselves the original recycler. Goodwill Industries® of Southern New Jersey and Philadelphia has always been an entrepreneurial leader, environmental pioneer and social innovator of the “reduce, reuse, repurpose” practice.

By donating your unwanted items to Goodwill, you are reducing the amount of waste going to local landfills. And, through a partnership with Dell, Goodwill provides an easy way for residents to recycle electronic items too, like computers, printers, cell phones etc…

Your donated goods have the power to make a difference in people’s lives, strengthen communities, and create a healthier environment. Reselling donated goods not only provides Goodwill with a revenue stream to support its mission of putting people with special needs to work, it makes us responsible environmental stewards— a role we take very seriously!

Goodwill is committed to improving the sustainability of our operations. Textiles, books, shoes, accessories and housewares that do not sell in Goodwill’s retail stores are salvaged. Nothing goes in the trash.

Just as there are things you Recycle, there are things you Donate. Here are 5 things that are probably collecting dust in your house that you can recycle by donating to Goodwill!

1. Cell Phone. That Zach Morris size phone stored in one of your junk drawers. Hello? Goodwill is calling.

2. Clothing. Follow the rule—if you haven’t worn it in a year, odds are you aren’t going to wear it. Donate it!

3. Computers. Good news. Goodwill accepts computers  in working and not working order!

4 . Chachkes. (choch – ke) That “unique” candle holder your grandma gave you for your birthday last year. Give it another home—Goodwill!

5. Books. Because, how many more times can you read the Harry Potter series?

The list could go on and on. But, you get the picture…clear the clutter and donate to Goodwill!

Students enrolled in the summer session of Goodwill’s School-to-Work Program had the opportunity to gain landscape and park maintenance job skills working in the Medford Township Park System. This program, which helps bridge the gap between the classroom and the workplace for special needs students from Camden City high schools, provides both hands-on training and a weekly paycheck from Goodwill. Many thanks to Medford Township for partnering with Goodwill and providing such wonderful work opportunities for our students!
